The worst movie theater in the world is Magic Johnson in Harlem, FDB and 125th.
It is worth going just once to actually have the experience.
Trust me that the amusement wears off after that first visit.
Well, at least it holds the (dubious) honor of being the northernmost movie theater in Manhattan. Despite the "ghetto" element they had, I miss the Nova (147th & Broadway) and the Coliseum (181st & Broadway).
We go quite frequently to Lincoln Center (? I think - big screens), and to the Lincoln Square theater, which is just below.
Also Film Forum and the Angelika, went to the latter much more often when we lived nearby.
Film Forum has really really good popcorn.

Ditto. Went once and I'm never going back.

I like UA Sheepshead bay. Especially early on a weekday. Place is empty. The seats are comfortable and sound is great though sometimes the bass is cranked up too much.
I haven't been yet but the Loew's Orpheum on Third Avenue between 86th and 87th has a bargain before noon: $6. I think they just started the policy.
Best deal in Manhattan? Anyone have anything better?

What time of day did you attend? Weekend, holiday?

Any other indi theaters? Best options/quality between those two mentioned?

More outer borough suggestions?
Regarding Magic Johnson, I said worst in the world as far as my experience goes and I am sticking by that.
Anthology Film Archives is very good film-wise but the seats are unbearable.
MoMA is excellent film-wise and seat-wise but no food.
I don't have time to go to the outer boroughs. I can scarcely get see a film once and while here. Thus my disgust and annoyance that Magic Johnson, a short enough walk, is truly abysmal. The theater actually smells, probably because many of the patrons throw their food around like wild animals. Perhaps worse.
We have always gone to Magic Johnson in the evening.

comparing apples to apples...back in the days,. i use to watch movies generally after work on fridays or thrusdays. I've have been to most of nyc movie theaters both weekend and weekdays. Overall, I find kips bay pretty crowded but not as crazy as union sq ones or lincoln sq.
Thank god for Widescreen TVs, surround sound, Blurays, Netflix and Pay per View.
AMEN to that.
(Don't forget Netflix Watch Instantly.)
And how many theaters provide a Laz-Y-Boy recliner WITH beer.
