Me and my friend plan on taking a trip to NYC during christmas. We plan on staying in Times Square, which airport is the closets to Times Square? Which is the easiest way to and from the airports. I don't wanna spend too much money on taxis but I do want the safest trip. If anyone could answer these questions it would be a lot of help!!!!!!!!!
Laguardia is the closest airport to midtown Manhattan. Newark and JFK are further away. But all offer many options into the city -- bus, train, subway, van, or taxi. Safety via any of these ways of traveling to airports is rarely an issue. Convenience and cost can be.
I would just see which flight is cheaper to JFK or LGA or EWR. I don't find it that difficult - in fact I think LGA Is harder to get to. You have Airtrain from JFK and EWR. LGA I would take a cab.
And yeah, you have an extremely long time to plan...
I agree that you pick the cheapest flight, not the closest airport. Newark is often cheaper. Then take the shuttle bus into Manhattan. Some people suggest the subway, but I don't think that's a good idea for newbies with luggage, especially since you sound like the nervous type.

If one has luggage one should definitely take a shuttle bus or taxi. If one only has a small carry-on then I suggest consider using public transportation.
You can get in to the city easily and surprisingly cheaply from any of the airports. First time I went, I flew in to Newark and got the train for (I believe) about $12 right in to Penn Station.
