I pay $650 a month, utilities included, but I live up in Inwood on the East side of Broadway. Unless you are willing to live with multiple roommates, for $800 you are probably limited to central or east harlem and above.
To be clear, the parts of Washington Heights or Inwood where you can live for 800 are perfectly SAFE...it's just that, if your goal is specifically to live in Manhattan, you're probably imagining "prime" Manhattan below 96th Street, and living way uptown will have no advantages over Brooklyn or Queens.

I think she is imagining prime Manhattan, because I don't really see the appeal of living with a gazillion roommates if it's above 96th Street. That really isn't the Manhattan experience to me and the commute can be as long as commuting from some nabes in Queens and BK. When I lived briefly in Manhattan, I lived centrally. I must say that I never liked living with people, so I chose to buy in the outer boroughs to have the space I desired.
It's all about being at the right place and at the right time for deals. There are several people I know of personally who make in that salary range and live in Manhattan...they have roommates of course. Maybe Stuy Town might be an option? The apartments are rather largish and can accomodate several people.

I know people who are sharing apartments downtown for $1200, which is probably the absolute max you'd want to spend on rent if you're making 50k.
Wrong. In Harlem, $800 is not possible in anything resembling a "safe" area.
And the better areas in Harlem are nearly as expensive as downtown now. You may get more space, but just comparing prices.

All people of a certain mind-set must be a certain color. So many have this assumption and I find it quite amusing. It is also an indication of actual racism, as has been well-discussed here many times.

I think it sucks above 96th and isn't worth it but that's just me.
