Hello all, I was wondering if 179th st and amsterdam area is safe past midnight. I've heard that west of broadway is pretty safe but hows this area?

Even with the fact that i know and grew up with many of these guys who live east of bway i still probably wouldnt live there. It isnt horrible but if i had a choice i'd def would go with west. Audobon and amsterdam just seems to have a bad rep here. Although there is a caucasian female nurse who i work with who lives on 172nd and between audobon and amsterdam and she has no problem whatsoever. Sometimes she gets home at 2 am from work.

If you are asking this question I would not choose to live there

This location is not too bad since it's located near the Hospital.

The area the OP is asking about is next to those big housing projects. OP - if you are over 6'2 with an ok build you will have no problems.

The whole east of Broadway thing is starting to become a bit cliche on here...

Agreed NYur..if you honestly believe that 1 street makes the difference between life and death, you should probably just stay home all day...it's safer!

Here's an insider tip from a native: If some one wants to rob or attack you, they have found ways to get across the invisible 20 foot high, electrified wall that is called Broadway, and they have also found a way to swim past the invisible moat filled with crocodiles and pirahnas that surrounds Broadway as well.

It's not so much unsafe as it has a noticeably lower QOL than west of Broadway. Worse housing, dirtier and noisier streets, low quality stores etc. Nicest parts are along Edgecombe Ave and some blocks around Yeshiva. Otherwise it is fairly depressing.

I would substitute "incredibly" for "fairly."
