Amsterdam and 163 may be better than the 140's between 7-8

Much worse in the 1980s and early 90s. That being said there are nicer areas in that general vicinity. Loitering and other qol issues are still a problem there.

I lived right around there for a few years. It's not dangerous unless you're involved in the criminal lifestyle. However, it's not an enjoyable place to live -- you will be dealing with a lot of people standing around at all hours of the night screaming, drinking, etc. And if you're a young and attractive female, prepare to be "hollered" at on a regular basis.

I agree. One of the worst parts of Harlem.

i remember reading an article that back in the 70's the corner of W 147th and 8th Avenue was the most dangerous corner in the city, with a high likelihood of any passersby getting hit by a bullet. and that the entire area between 127th and 159th streets between the E River and St Nicholas Ave was called "Dodge City"

The worst thing is that in addition to the shootings on the streets and everything else, many really violent crimes happen in homes. This is still the case. So the area has this sort of energy.

Tell your daughter and her friend they don't need to be in Manhattan and search in other places. OR if they feel they do, to up their budget so they can live in a better neighborhood and have a better QOL.
