I just looked at the calendar and saw that July 4th is on a Thursday this year. In my office, we get the day before as a half day and then the 4th off but if we're really lucky and the following day is a Friday, we get that off as well, providing a four day weekend. I'm curious as to what other places do in this situation? Are you worked like slaves or do you have more time to spend with your family?
I get Thurs./Fri. off and I took Monday off too....5 day weekend

We originally only had the 4th off, but they sent out a memo a few weeks ago announcing that we'd also have the 5th, plus the days in between Christmas and New Year's.
I still remember very fondly when I worked for a reinsurance company that was the best in terms of work/life balance, and we would always get two days off on the holidays, plus the day before would be half a day. And, for X-mas, they would have kids party on the 23rd from the morning till about 3 PM, with Santa Claus, individual age-appropriate gifts for all kids, tons of food, DJ, magician, balloon twisting, etc, and then the 24th and the 25th would be days off. That was life-9 to 5:30every day, maybe 2-3 late nights till 8 PM during quarter-close with dinner and car home, 3 weeks vacation, and the nicest folks you could ever work with.
Some of these responses are priceless... Then the other question is, how many people travel during the 4th vs staying here in the city? I always seem to get slammed with the traffic no matter what time I leave the office and I'm determined to have a short commute home this year.
