The Wall Street Journal*profiles the astonishing $45 million renovation of Queens Plaza, where "a wasteland of potholed roads, a parking lot and elevated subway tracks" has been transformed into an urban oasis.

I am happy to read this article - accurate. Queens Plaza is still not a quiet oasis but FAR better with the back end of the park getting much quieter. As for the highway, this is one of the few places more of those cool wooden overhead walkways would be a boon. One of my favorite features of the whole NYC subway are those walkways.
Hope they solved the problem of speeding cars coming off the bridge on the queens bound one lane service road from crashing into those storefronts. Also would be nice if they can always keep the el painted with a fresh coat, but that would need another $45m.
I always thought Queens Plaza would be an ideal location for a commercial strip, especially since LIC desperately needs amenities. Now that the Plaza is fixed up a bit, it would be nice to see some retail move into the area. Some of the surrounding buildings on the plaza, like the ones that houses the subway entrances, are tiny and underutilizing their lots. It would be nice if they could be knocked out or become part of a larger building that could handle large retail spaces.
^LIC is one of the fastest changing neighborhoods in NYC.

The redesign has proven fantastic. The bike paths are heavily utilized.
