Even in Queens I think youre going to have to look hard for a place for two people for $1100 a month. That's also assuming its a shared apt. with other people. You're not going to find anything for that price in your own apt.
You're better off in queens at that price. Exchange the cool brooklyn postal code for safety. It's worth the 5-10 extra minutes of commuting.
Agreed. East Flatbush isn't even considered the "cool" part of brooklyn. Not worth the risk just so you can tell your friends back home you live in brooklyn.

You can find something for 1100-1200 in queens. And even the bad parts of queens are like paradise compared to most of brooklyn.
I think its time to move. Guiliani/Bloomberg cleaned up the city so someone like you could live in East Flatbush. However, with a probable democrat mayor who will be soft on crime, your white ass will not be safe in East flatbush.
Bloomberg is still mayor and yet Flatbush isnt safe. So why pretend that his methods have worked?
I thought Bedford/Lenox was Prospect Lefferts-Gardens (Flatbush) not East Flatbush? I actually like Lefferts Gardens but I haven't spent much time there recently, and when I did, it was only during the day. Also I did notice different parts of the neighborhood have different vibes.
Of all the places in the city to live on a $1100 apartment rental budget, I don't think this is a bad choice. Although if safety is a big concern, it makes sense to go further south in Brooklyn to areas that are further from Manhattan but safer, or to some Queens neighborhoods where there are still $1100 apartments. Rents have been going up so much lately I am not sure where those neighborhoods are anymore.
I don't particularly like that area and rarely go over there.
I like the Prospect Lefferts area but if you venture near Flatbush Ave. anything could break out, remember the shooting on Flatbush near Empire where an old man either sitting or going to his car got shot?
The area the OP was in is sketchy to me. I live closer to Nostrand further south of the area over here it's not as bad. I see more and more White people moving in and I sense the Jewish owners are making a consorted effort to do this. A building on Nostrand was just renovated, everything all new with a trendy looking storefront. The apartments have all been rented in no time I heard the rent is pretty high so the amenities are probably very nice.
85Dumbo, I wasn't in the area during 90's but I've heard stories. They are working on cleaning up this area, it's gentrifying. It won't be too long before the hoodrats are gone.
So OP, maybe you could look for an apartment along connecting streets along Nostrand. I wouldn't go past Linden though, that's just my personal preference.
Yes, but it would not be fun. We signed a year lease. I haven't seen a lot of places elsewhere that are 1100-1200 a month. But there sure are a lot available in flatbush!
You could find plenty of places in Queens, like G-Dale said. You should also consider Gravesend, Bensonhurst, or Sheepshead Bay which are more further out, but much safer. Trust me, sacrificing commute time for safety and tranquility is worth it.
bedford and lenox is a few blocks from SUNY downstate... at least in the 90s it was considered east flatbush. dont know what the real estate people are branding it to get white transplants to move there.
