Astoria would probably be perfect for you, it's a lively neighborhood in it's own right and you're a train stop or two away from Manhattan.

You'd have much better luck posting this in the NYC forum, though.

if you're going to work on long island and plan on driving, places in queens such as floral park, jamaica estates, hollis hills, fresh meadows, valley stream, bayside, douglaston, may work out. but if you are looking to take the subway train to manhattan then astoria, forest hills/kew gardens/rego park, middle village are good alternatives as they are safe and easy to get to the city.

He mentions he wants a place that's "not far out" and a "quick trip to the city" so It Sure Doesn't Sound Like He's Working on Long Island.

Go for Astoria, its the closest thing to being in Manhattan. It has nice shops and restaurants and its very safe. I would suggest something near Ditmars, or Broadway.

^^^ good question. People are saying "Astoria", but that part of Queens is a little bit expensive. You could find something in a place like Sunnyside, Woodside, Jackson Heights, etc.

A prerequiste to all "where should I live" questions in the NYC forum should be:

"What's your budget?"

all those places that were just mentioned in queens are not that great. it will be a huge change from san diego. astoria is okay..its definitely not the best of the neighborhoods. astoria isn't really that pricey either. sure its pricier than sunnyside and woodside, but have you people seen those neighborhoods? not a pretty picture. i personally don't like astoria. too many people around..polluted..not very pretty. i don't know why its being lauded so many times. sure, there are things to do, but there are things to do elsewhere as well.
