There is sooo much hype and opinions about GENTRIFICATION IN NYC that the pace it WAS going will slow down although it won't stop completely.

Forget Bed-Stuy. When East Harlem gentrifies completely then let's talk.

It's not like the existing population just disappears when a neighborhood gentrifies. They'll move to another neighborhood whether in the NYC area or not, and cause that area to go downhill. Look at Mount Vernon as an example of what can happen to nicer areas in this case. There are those with a vested interest in seeing neighborhoods gentrify because of real estate investment, but they care little about the social problems it may cause elsewhere. In NYC limits, areas like Canarsie and Flatlands are seeing the opposite trend from what is happening in Northern Brooklyn.

nyc was crack-infested in the 80s. it's thanks to gentrification by whites that it raised itself up. that and proper mayor guidance. nyc could easily have been detroit today. don't kid yourself. when spike lee says he hates what has happened to his neighborhood, i safely assume he misses random drive by shootings ala chiraq today (chiraq being chicago and iraq), low property values (also hurting black home owners), and drugs being sold everywhere openly because even cops are afraid of the gang bangers.

I know it doesn't. I I usually mention Fort Green with Clinton Hill or Fort Green Clinton Hill corridor.

The White population in New York fell between the 1990 and 2000 census, and between the 2000 and 2010 census. It's not whites that have caused the city to improve so much since the early 90s. Nice try though.

Sorry to destroy the party but NYC non Hispanic white population has grown 3 years straight. Much of it has to do with migration. Plenty of suburban whites are moving to nyc out of college or moving to nyc for opportunities. I can admit that the native white population which is aesthetically different from white transplants and harbor different set of values have been on the decline Also how come nyc private corporate job market remains mainly white and not minority? Can you explain this?

Yeah, the trend has been reversing in the past three years. I was addressing the idea that the growth of non-hispanic whites had somehow stopped the crack epidemic and improved NYC during the 90s and 2000s.

The private corporate job market involves skills and job experience that minorities just don't have. That's just the reality of it.

Because the NYC private sector supplies jobs for the entire metropolitan area and not just the boros. It gets much more white as you go out there. Just because non-whites dominate the boros population doesn't mean they are not still the minority of the entire tri-state region. And they all come into Manhattan for employment.

I'm sorry?

Although other ethnic and demographics did play a role in the "turning around" of New York City, make no mistake it was in large part due to White/European Americans mainly from middle to wealthy class that have brought about much of the change we see in NYC, especially Manhattan.

This was done via their tax dollars on everything from sales to purchasing a home, to shopping, attending Broadway shows and so forth. From Manhattan to much of West Brooklyn the faces of wealth in NYC is overwhelmingly white and they are the persons who have done much to change this City from what it was from the bankruptcy days of the 1970's through 1980's.

It is the reversal of "white flight", the fact that demographic from not just NYC are but all over the USA and indeed world see the City as a highly desirable place to live once again that is in no small part pushing this turn around. Who do you see living in OneWest57? Who is buying and or renting in the rapidly changing neighborhood of "FiDi? Tribeca? SoHo? The Village? East Village?
