No one did. However, the police did not charge the drivers involved in the recent events and chose to crack down on pedestrians rather than drivers
Maybe 6 or 7 times / year, though much less in Manhattan. Jaywalking pedestrians are pain for driving but I just dealt with them as part of what comes with NYC.* I did feel a bit more conscietious jaywalking in NYC after I've driven a few times.
*The few times I've bicycled in NYC, jaywalking pedestrians were more of a nuisance. I suspect pedestrians don't think of bicycles as a danger.
No, they don't and it causes all sorts of problems there as well.
In Central park despite having clearly marked areas on the road for pedestrians they insist on walking in the middle. Well that is where persons who are riding bicycles or on roller blades are supposed to be; sooner or later someone is struck. You have persons that will stand in the middle of a roadway in CP at the bottom of a hill. When bikes start zooming down they get that dear caught in headlights look and either jump out of the way, or are hit. Then there is my personal all time favourite; the men who think they are Big Shots with the ladies and stand in front of bikers or roller bladers (female) with their arms outstretched as if waiting for an embrace. One idiot soul got slammed into badly from that stunt.
Good, get more and more nervous about that. It's the proper way for drivers in a city this congested should feel. And the laws of physics imply that you are the one propelling the ton of metal and plasic down the street, YOU are the person who needs to take care.
Make believe you are driving a lawn mower...would you expect the onus to be on the population to stay out of your way, or on YOU to take proper care not to rip anyone's foot to shreds
Lawn mower accidents happen. And snow plows can leave some nasty scars. Burns like hell with all the salt.
I really would like the data on the comparison of jaywalking pedestrians killed by motorized vehicle with those pedestrians killed by motorized vehicles while NOT jaywalking.

Based solely on anecdotal evidence, I bet you wouldn't be happy with what the stats revealed.

"Pedestrians struck by cars are most often hit while in the crosswalk, with the signal on their side."
Data was obtained through victim self-reporting shortly after a collision...
Good one.
"Doc, to be honest, I walked out into the street against traffic with my iPod on while texting because Janet Sadik-Khan always says that cars are the devil and pedestrians and bicyclists are the future."
business as usual. Expect now instead of blacks and hispanics, they're going after non-english speaking chinese. :P
