Yeah, it sure was a third-world hellhole back before consolidation. My family still tell stories of how horrific it was in the late 1800s. Thank God for Manhattanites for agreeing to unify the cities.
ABC was covering the aftermath of the snowstorm and interviewing people on the street. They commented on how the UES wasn't plowed or cleared properly and Brooklyn was. They interviewed a hipster in Brooklyn and here is what he said: "Brooklyn is now the cultural epicenter of NYC and Manhattan is second class and they just have to get used to it."
Oh, really?? Brooklyn is the "epicenter" because the transplanted hipsters cannot afford Manhattan?

I didn't get peeved over it. I was just commenting about it. I couldn't believe anyone would say something like that. "Brooklyn is the cultural epicenter of NYC"...... okay!
So where is the cultural epicenter of NYC? Don't cop out and say there isn't a center, we're talking of the greatest mass of new, and many would say the mass has been in Brooklyn for some time now. If you want recreations and continuation of stolid and conventional cultural rivers then Manhattan is your place!, but whats the source of the new, where is the zeitgeist springin' from?! It ain't midtown. And its not the UES ho ho ho. Perhaps plastic Times Square, or riveting "Battery Park City"?
Is it all the poor people in brooklyn that offend your sensibilities?, what an outrage, those uppity oiks.
Some would say Manhattan (which has a huge population of people not born in NYC) with its rich-owned apartments, tourists, tourists, broadway/Disney/snoozzzze, tourists, commuters and richer blander transplants is.... not the center of the cultural growth in NYC but just more of the same.
Must be a shock for the Manhattan-centric. Or for anyone who has been under the sofa for the past decade.

I would say it is true--- only people from Manhattan think that Manhattan is "the city"--
There is nothing authentic about Manhattan. There is no culture to Manhattan. When I was a little kid, I always thought Harlem was in The Bronx, because it had a real identity, a real culture, and so it was nothing like the rest of the borough, but nowadays with gentrification it's becoming just like everywhere else.
In terms of producing culture, the hipster's statement is actually correct. The artist studios have by and large moved from Manhattan to Brooklyn. If you want the latest, Brooklyn is the place to be. Not sure if the same applies to performing arts and culture but I won't be surprised if it is.
How can you identify one aspect of culture and say then that Brooklyn is the epicenter! More artists live in Brooklyn (what evidence do you have of this anyway) therefore ignore all other culture...this one is the only one that matters! LOL!
If you want the latest what? Latest people living off their parents? Latest kids pretending to be poor? Latest drug "culture"? Latest posers and wannabes? Latest suckers paying 5x more than anyone else would? Latest transplants following TV shows to mimic?
