I depend of several of these stores for basics but have never associated any with a big chain? Do they all keep exactly that name or do they go by variants like Dollar Plus, Dollar Dream, etc.

The article mentions ONLY Walmart getting the business and, lord knows, that means nothing to most of us. I know Macy's did well, but Penney's and Target have not.
This recession/stagflation has not played out yet. Week by week people are still getting their last Unemplyment check (and thus being counted as NOT UNEMPLOYED...biggest joke ever.)
We will know the full impact when only when the Fed ends it's life support measures and lets interest rates go where they historically belong.
If higher interest rates led to even more unemployment, guess who would take the blame? The Fed. The new Fed chairwoman herself has said interest rates will remain the same until the unemployment AND other leading indicators are better.

Unfortunately the present unemployment/underemployment picture is caused by neither high nor low interest rates. The stock and bond markets were actually receptive to a gradual increase in rates as had been seen over the past few months.

I disagree. The fact the Dollar stores tend to be in the poorest neighborhoods say something right there.

You have a much better selection of soaps, toothpaste, mouthwash, and other consumables at Duane Reade. Dollar Stores sell just the cheapest crap. It's okay for stuff you wipe your butt with, but for other things it isn't good. And as a drug store Duane Reade has pharmaceuticals, prescription and over the counter.

Buying the cheapest soaps or other cleaning agents for example isn't good for people with sensitive skin or allergies who must be careful about what they buy.

You basically get what you pay for.

The FED is Teflon and has remained blameless through many a past debacle which they caused. Do you think the financial collapse was caused by sunspots?

The very best Dollar store is Jacks...it is in Herald Square.
It's sister store is on 45th between Fifth and Sixth.
Poorest neighborhoods?

Very first one was the $.69 STORE. It was on West Eighth St right where McDougald begins.
Poorest neighborhood?
Terrific one next door to BAM's Harvey Theater. Maybe not the best neighborhood but certainly not "poor."

I agree that we need more quality supermarkets, but the Dollar stores are as bad, or worse, than the local bodegas. You can buy a broom there, it will last 2 days. You can buy detergent there...it is colored water with fragrance...you only THINK it is cleaning anything because it smells like flowers!

For anyone that disagrees, go and purchase dishwashing liquid or any cleaner, and then buy the same brand at a legit store (Duane Read, Rite-Aid, etc), and then use them side by side...one is just colored water, the other is the actual product. I have noticed this fraud at the local supermarkets also (Fine Fare, C-Town, and others)...they have fraudulent products also. There was a recent article about this:

http://www.cnn.com/2014/03/08/justic...auty-supplies/

Reputable establishments purchase from approved suppliers/vendors of the manufacturers, the Dollar stores buy from anyone that sells cheaply, no questions asked...so you end up with a major underground counterfeit supply of fraudulent products at these stores and no idea what is in them! Beware.

Procter and Gamble LOVES people with your mentality. You parrot their advertising to a T.
Anyone who really thinks "they get what they pay for" will buy more readily as the same item goes up in price thus incentivizing all merchants to raise prices in order to increase sales. The reason the real world does not work that way is that there are few fools who actually BELIEVE that nonsense.

I used to work for a major company that made detergents and contracted out the bottling of several of their products to "contract packers" who packaged EVERYTHING from dozens of companies.
The running joke was that the bottle and the labelling EACH cost more than the chemicals.
You trypically had 2 cents worth of stuff in a quart bottle that cost 4 cents and a sprayer that cost a dime.

So you could buy your $.02 detergent for a Dollar or for $5. They all use the same detergents, now from Chinese companies.
(With the $5 detergent you got $3 worth of advertising.)

No you are buying $.000001 cents of water which smells like flowers for 99 cents, or you can buy actual detergent for $5...who cares about the actual cost to manufacture? It is sold everywhere for $5 dollars more or less, but the dollar stores magically get it for $99 cents???????? Right.
