I am currently a college student receiving full scholarship for tuition and would like to continue attending school full-time, but I don't have the means to pay for a room in the area. Where can I obtain resources about being homeless in a particular area (so the commute to and from school won't be so bad; Flushing, Queens in particular)?

That is a really, really bad idea. Do you think you'll be able to sleep undisturbed on a park bench and wake up to a sunny morning every day? You will not be able to maintain your studies while homeless. It's incredibly hard here.

There should be a crisis management office for students at your school--as there are at many universities. Start with them and see what your options are.

I second this. They will likely be able to help. You can't even afford a room somewhere? I bet you could find one out there for around $500 if you really hunted around. I mean you could come up with an extra $500 a month pretty easily doing odd jobs.

Can't you people recognize a put on when you see one. To the OP if you think homelessness is something to joke about I should only wish that you could experience it for one day and perhaps your smart ass mouth would be shut. It is nothing to joke about.

Serious question....if you are homeless, why would you choose somewhere to stay where the commute 'isn't that bad?' Or are you picky about your neighborhood?
I would just walk outside in NYC any direction....you can't go more than two blocks without having plenty of people to talk with that can share their first hand experience.

The only advice I can offer is to be hesitant about scheduling early classes. I work down on Wall Street, and the homeless down here don't really get up before 10 / 10:30am.

Y'all do know being in a shelter is still considered homeless doncha? Nowhere did the OP express wanting to sleep on park benches.

OP, you could go to the nearest Salvation Army where they will access you and send you to one of their shelters.

I would research information through the coalition for the homeless website.

They list places to get free meals and shelter in the city.

Even though posters have given you very good advice on what to do and where to go, I must say that your post disturbs me greatly.

People don't "choose" to be homeless in NYC. It really is because they have NO MONEY or ANYPLACE to go.

There is very real poverty out here and you're making a mockery of it. Do not go to school in NYC, if you can't afford to pay for a dorm or a room to rent. Be a bum in your own city.

You're pitiful. I'm sorry, but I can't get with this. Not at all.

Doesn't anyone WORK anymore?!?!?!
I don't care if you are going to school full time. I put myself through school on my own while working 70 hours a week and not high paying jobs. GET A JOB! Fast food and retail are always hiring
