Hey All,

Bunch of my friends and I are going to be in the city next weekend (YAY!!!). We are a group of mid-20's, down to party, hahaha. Preferably no dive bars, but nothing too fancy/upscale, either. What would be the best area for us to walk around? No country music We're into hip hop and/or dance music And stupid question but should we expect to pay a cover for all the bars?

There is no cover for bars unless they have live music.

most places will not have any music because of the stupid NYC Cabaret laws.... If you do find them they may ask a cover but almost all will charge you a lot per drink. But you are a tourist so once in your life it won't hurt you to go a little crazy.

Lower East Side/ East Village would be your best bet

Expect to see some shady characters though, be smart.

They won't have LIVE music. Every place will play music (usually much too loud if you ask me, but I'm a prematurely old man).

East Village/LES is exactly what you're looking for.

There's bars and then there's live music places that also have bars. Straight-up bars usually won't have live music but there are bar-like clubs with live music (with a $10-ish charge). On the Lower East Side a couple of the latter include The Delancey and Arlene's Grocery, also possibly Mercury Lounge (depends on the night - a lot of their stuff are ticketed perfs). They are generally alt-indie music though, not a lot of hip hop. A DJ often takes over later for dance music. There's another place in the lower East Village whose name escapes me right now. The LES/East Village is your best bet. There's also a bit of a bro-ish bar scene on 3rd Ave. south of 34th St.

There's all sorts of clubs in the village. Who says there's no live music?

OP, my favorite place to bar crawl is in the West Village...The Red Lion, Peculiar Pub and the Half Pint. For music, there's lots of places with live music but if you want certain music then you have to go to the dance clubs.
