For anyone who has any interest in history, particularly in WWII, there is a wonderful exhibit at the Grolier Club (47 East 60th) called "The Power of Words and Images in a World at War." It's a superlative small compilation mostly of art posters, public notices, correspondence, etc., chronologically through the period. Sometimes inspiring, sometimes bitterly amusing, sometimes sad. There's a poster with a proclamation about Japanese internment, Hitler's notes for one of his speeches, an actual Auschwitz shirt, and a newspaper front page declaring victory (with something like "Carnival Atmosphere Reigns in the City"). There an amazing two-page letter from FDR to what seems to be an ordinary citizen who wrote to him. I particularly loved the letters, which manage to combine elegance with a very conversational tone.
It's only here through August 2, though, so you'll have to move fast.
