A few years ago we switched from Time Warner to Verizon as we didn't think it was worth the amount of money ($170 per month) we were paying. Verizon's package cost $79 per month until the contract ran out and then rose to around $120. Since we watch little TV, we think we should be able to find a phone/internet package for less but I can't find any providers that offer this combination. Would anybody have recommendations for a cheaper TV/internet/phone package or where I could find just a phone/internet provider?

Unless you can mount a satellite dish facing the appropriate direction, we are all stcu with what is wired to out building or street.
Most have either Time-Warner or Verizon (cheaper) or both. Some throw RCN into the mix, some Cablevision. It all depends on what is available to your building.

But really, a Triple Play at $120 is good and the way they work it, by dropping one of the components very little is saved.

Phone internet is cheaper with Verizon (check their website) but perhaps not as low as you would like.

What MIGHT happen is that when you call to remove the TV component, they will give you a slightly better price for keeping it.

Alternatively, you can call TW and tell them you want the Double Play and get a deal price for the next two years.

I'm at $149 after 4 years and I too am looking for a way to shave some off but we live for TV...so options are limited. I occasionally look to switch to TW but once I put my zip code in, all the bargains disappear and even the 1 year teaser rate is no savings for me.

P.S. TV via free antenna is pretty good in the area...I did it for 6 weeks with an indoor antenna and I was amazed with about 20 channels, half in dazzling HD.

The only alternative I can think of is it to "cut the cable." Use an antenna for tv and supplement with streaming services like netflix, hulu, etc. For internet you are pretty much stuck though.

Unlike more suburban locations, getting off the air TV in NYC is an iffy proposition. Indoor antenna's are usually blocked, rooftop access is questionable at best, and may also have bad reception.

And if your getting high speed internet, it's going to be through a cable operator (TWC, Verizon, or RCN.) So even if you don't get traditional video service, you're still dependent on them. And now you're paying for other services to make up for the cable service.

Where I live, it's only TWC, FIOS, or a satellite dish.

And Comcast is going to buy TWC.

What are you typically watching? Would Hulu or Netflix suffice?

Call your carrier once your promo is up and threaten to cancel because the cost it too high. They will try to convince you that they offer the best service and if you persist, they will then try to lower your plan to slower speeds/less channels, if you persist even more, they will eventually offer you a discount. You can speed up this process if you have a better promo from another carrier to keep reiterating during that phone call. No carrier wants to lose a customer and will work with you to keep you. Should they call your bluff or you are a bad customer (late payments/collections) you will have to follow through. It's easy enough to call back and sign up using a different name in the household and get the current promo. Also note that this isnt limited to internet, you can apply the same strategy with phone service (TMO, VZW, ATT etc), credit card service, and many other things. A little haggling can go a long way. Personally, I spent 30 minutes on the phone with Verizon FIOS to lower my bill from 240$ to 150$ while retaining the same plan and no contract. It was originally 190$ but my 2 year promo expired and it shot up to 240$.

Phone/internet deals aren't usually much cheaper, even if you find them. We only have internet now. (Well, now as in the past four or five years...)

At least you can make them compete and give you a better price.
