I'm kind of conflicted with this particular case. Yes, it was manslaughter, but I really need to know the cop's reasoning behind shooting someone so fast like this. It's not like he didn't have his flashlight on, so it would have been easy to see if Akai was a threat or not. To make matters worse, is that he didn't even call his partner nor 911 to get an ambulance to check on the man. He texted his union rep.
Say what you want, but who would even think about texting their union rep after shooting someone accidentally? Wouldn't you call an ambulance, then alert your partner who was in the other building checking the same light fixtures?
If you're that afraid of black and brown people, then just MAYBE being a police officer isn't for you.
Hopefully, Akai's family sues NYCHA for not producing lights in the stairways as well. This is a holdover piece of slumlording from the Bloomberg administration. Cops should not have to act as substitute maintenance men, in addition to protecting the public.
Its my understanding that It was a rookie cop and he was on edge patrolling a high crime building/area. Still no excuse. If you're that afraid then don't become a cop.

Because the Pink Houses was such a lovely place to live prior to Bloomberg.

That's the difference between being a cop and most other jobs. You make a mistake and you can kill someone.
