Cause that area is Tourist Central! Have you been to Herald Square since they chopped up Broadway and made that plaza in front of Macy's?
If I were going to open a Chick-fil-a or an In and out I'd do it in Mid-town West, either around 34th Street or 42nd Street.
I think they were afraid to open their 1st NYC place in an area where it might not be successful so they chose a location that has mostly tourists who are familiar with and not hostile to the brand. They are smart enough to know that they are opening on a different terrain than they are used to.They scaled back their original plan for conquering NY and are being very cautious because they know it would be a big embarrassment if things don't go well. The stakes are high and NY'ers might turn out to be very underwhelmed by chick fil a .
I lived out in California for a brief period and I never got the hype over in-an-out. It's the same pathetically small 1/100th of a pound patty that every other place uses. The only noticeable difference is they put some wilted lettuce on their burgers.

If I had to choose, i'd take Chic Fil A over In n Out. There are a lot of good burger options in New York, but not so many good Chicken Sandwich options. But dont get me wrong, I'd welcome In n Out with open arms.

There already is a CFA location in Manhattan; near Washington Square Park at NYU, has been there for some time now. Think however the place is restricted to NYU students and staff but not sure if this is true and or strictly enforced.

Not true. Anyone can go in. Its sorta hard to find. you grab n pay. You get your own food, and the only place to sit is in the cafeteria. They only have chicken sandwiches, nuggets, and fries. You want beverages, or any other thing on the menu? You're out of luck, because it's express.
