Aloha Manhattanites! I'm a male retiree of a few years looking to visit American/Canadian cities over 5-10 years of my 60's. Will concentrate on European/Asia travel in my 70's. Lived and worked 30 years in the SF Bay Area but not in the City. Retired to Honolulu on the beach just outside of Waikiki.

Hate to vacation so I'm looking at visits of 30 days minimum and would prefer the same place each yearly visit to become "part" of the neighborhood whether that means just the building or the immediate shops/bars etc. I would want to hit the main tourist sites and definitely plan a December visit for the Christmas experience at least once but not that fond of COLD weather or Christmas that much either.

What month would you advise to visit and is there any event that you think is worth coming for regardless of the month?

Also can you recommend a specific neighborhood?

Mahalo

Second half of September or 2nd half of April or 1st two weeks of May. Best weather!!

There are events ALL THE TIME everywhere, so unless you have something specific in mind, I think you'd be best off coming when you can enjoy outdoor sights and venues.

If you enjoy hot weather, you could add in all the summer months as well. I'm not a fan of hot weather, so those times are my personal preference.

Starting from the end of October to early Dec NYC starts to turn on a tremendous amount of festive events highlighted with Halloween parade, Thanksgiving parade and not to forget the spectacular Christmas lights at around the Rock center. The weather stays mild until early December and as a retiree, you are privileged to be able to avoid other annoying tourist crowds because they are likely trapped at work in Nov and Dec, which means you pay less to get more....

Autumn season is the time to be in New York if you have lower tolerance to weather and climate extremes. Summer is too hot and humid. Spring can be too rainy. Winter can be bitterly cold and miserable.

fall is the best. kids are back to school , teachers are back to work , the crowds are reduced but never gone and the weather is still good.

we live 20 minutes from manhattan so we make use of the city year round. we just do more indoor things in the winter.

being photographers my wife and i never run out of things to do.

we were going to retire to the pocono's where we had a 2nd home but nope not for us. nyc just offers to much on a daily basis to give that up.

Thanks for the replies. Sounds like the last quarter of the year is best mainly for weather and less crowds. Will I still experience the hustle and bustle (the fun part) of the city? I'm spoiled that I haven't had weather control my actions for the last 40 years.

I grew up in the Ohio river valley area so I know heat and humidity but that was before A/C. Does the weather really control you?

I'm not sure what you mean when you ask if the weather controls us? You asked what's the best time of year to visit. In my opinion, the best time of year to visit is when you can experience any type of environment (outdoor and indoor) in the most comfortable manner.

Certainly if you are comfortable, say, sitting outside in Central Park or walking the Highline, when it's 100 and very humid or when it's 22 with a biting wind, or when it's 38 with huge piles of dirty melting slush to slog through at every intersection, then sure, come anytime of year. Your tourist dollars are welcome anytime.

Another vote for autumn in NYC. You can go to Central Park or on short trips to nearby areas in upstate NY or farther away in New England towns to see the beautiful fall foliage. The weather is really not bad until December ( most years). It is really a perk to pick the times to go to normally crowded sites, restaurants, museums, etc. Spring is also nice, though this spring appears to be overcast a lot.
Spring in NYC is best appreciated coming out of a severe winter. Then it is heavenly to wear a light
sweater/ jacket or even to be able to go out in short sleeves and light pants.
