The measure, which overwhelmingly passed the state Legislature in June, would have allowed riders on some routes to get two free transfers instead of one within two hours.

MetroCards now allow one free transfer between a subway and a bus or between two buses during a two-hour period.

As part of their commute, most of these riders have to take two buses before reaching the subway and are paying two fares

“The MTA estimates it would cost approximately $40 million annually to provide a second free transfer, yet the bill does not provide any funding to account for this expense,” Cuomo said in his veto message.

I grew up in a two-fare zone, back in the day when you couldn't transfer from the bus to the subway. That's just the way it was, and you knew that before you lived there. Rents and housing prices were lower because of the inconvenience.

Well if they buy unlimited metrocards they could have three or more free transfers on those routes. Not a big deal.

With unlimited cards, free transfers become a complete non-issue. It is only for the pay-per-ride folks (like ME) that free transfers represent a potential savings.

But again, who actually needs that third ride? I can only envision someone in the depth of Corona needing a bus to a subway into Manhattan and then another bus to a job on 12th Avenue?

That's not fair to the people who live beyond walking distance from the subway. Four fares a day for work is onerous for many.

That's absurd, why? The implementation of bus to subway transfers was one of the best things MTA did in a while.
