with the hours you work it will make sense to live in the bronx. you can fine MANY decent rental in pelham/morris park area. I just run a search on craig's list and found many rentals under 1200 in pelham/morris park area.

Considering the 2 train - it's not the best to ride especially at night. It's not pleasant below 180 late nights..... if you live in the area then you don't have to worry about taking the train. if you go down to the city - it's pretty safe to take teh train but coming back especially if late at night, pay the cab fare..... you avoid all the nonsense.

check craig's list for eastchester rd rentals and see what you find. you should definitely find something in the area.

as for park slope, i can tell you the rentals will be much more expensive than ANYTHING you find in the bronx and the NH doesn't even compre to morris park.

Yeah Park Slope is going to be crazy expensive.

Morris Park and the surrounding areas are pretty suburban, so you'll probably need a car.

There's a nice Pathmark right near the hospital that most people from Morris Park use. It has plenty of parking, and spots on the roof when the regular lot gets filled.

mario--i think that's the bad section of Morris park--kind of close to where the "eastern" bronx becomes the "east" bronx

(The number 5 would work too except early morning service only begins at E180 in the Bronx whereas the no. 2 always runs from Brooklyn).

My two big questions are:

1) Will this be safe to do in the 5-6:30AM range as a single female?

2) Are there good safe + walkable neighborhoods along that route (the closer to a stop the better) I could live in with rents in the $1500-1800 range? I'd prefer 1 bedroom but can live with a studio.

I really liked the program when I visited, but I need favorable answers if I'm going to rank it highly. Thanks in advance for any help!
You should be alright on the 2/5 to Pelham Pkwy at that time. It's early morning and people are on their way to work.

The neighborhoods in the area are some of the nicest in the Bronx. I lived in Pelham Gardens area (just north of Pelham Pkwy by bet. Eastchester road and Esplanade) for 2 years. Has got to be one of the quietest neighborhoods I ever lived in. I loved it.

The rent is not that bad, a 2BR can be had for around $1350, a 1BR for about $1100. People tend to take care of their homes in this area so you wont really find many homes with ugly apartments.

Take a look at Morris Park too, bordering between Pelham Pkwy South, Eastchester Road and Bronxdale Ave. Morris park actually goes out farther past White Plains road (towards 180th St), but I'm not really fond of that area.

Theres plenty of shops on Morris Park Ave and even in Pelham Gardens on Eastchester Road. Another really good neighborhood, Pelham Bay, a little farther away from Einstein/Jacobi but another good place to find an apt. There you can find the 6 train under Westchester Ave and plenty of shops on Crosby Ave and along Westchester Ave under the El. Pelham Bay 1BR ~ $1000 / 2BR $1200-1400 depending where.

You could also live inan elevator building, but those are pretty old and run down. You're much better off in a private house.

If you can transfer to the 6 train to Pelham Bay station, that's closer than taking the #2, and there's MANY buses right there, running both ways, so you can get to Jacobi in about 10 minutes, from the station, safely and securely.
