Anyone familiar with this area in the Bronx and student housing off campus?

My younger sisters friend is going to Fordham in the fall and doesn't want to live on campus. I told her to live above E187 street and close to Arthur Ave as possible for safety sake. is the area below safe for students?

FWIW she grew up in nyc so she has street smarts just not familiar with this area. Thanks

It was fairly safe when I attended Fordham, but that was back in the 1980s. I doubt it is a hotbed of crime.

Why does she not want on campus housing?

I live in the area but I'm above 187 and close to Fordham Rd and Arthur, pretty much the area you told your sis' friend to concentrate on. I think your recommendation was spot on and is what I would recommend as well. This part of belmont is more attractive and safer, not to mention a little closer to transportation. I would imagine below 187 is a little cheaper but then you are further away from the campus so I think all things being considered it is probably worth it to pay a little more and be in the safer, more convenient, and more attractive area.
