I'm 40. As someone else mentioned: It is a waste of time to compare yourself to your friends. Focus on you and your goals, and the opportunities will come. I would also advise you not to worry too much about money (I mean, unless you can't eat or something), but I know that it is more important to some people than others.
"Mo money mo problems."
The more you make the more you spend, doesn't make you much more happier after earning a certain amount to live comfortably and within one's means. The marginal propensity to consume is what it's called in econ. And don't compare with other people, you will never be satisfied that way. There will always be others making more and less than you. As long as you're happy doing what you're doing and it's not draining you too much , you're doing good.

a $65k salary in this area will not get you a decent home with any kind of reasonable commute into NYC.

Homeownership is not a requisite for happiness. Living and chasing a higher salary is a endless rat race. When you are making more than you are now, your starter house will no longer be good enough and you want a bigger house. When you get your raise again, the bigger house is no longer good enough and you want a vacation house in Cali by the beach and a convertible for the weekends. O i got a bonus, let me treat myself to a Piaget since im getting tired of the Rolex from last year. You get the gist. Do what you enjoy or can tolerate without killing and burning yourself out and OP is in the right path.
You can lose money with home ownership along with all the other responsibilities that come with home ownership. Again, more money more problems. A $65k salary can you get a nice apt. With a close commute to the Fidi if you live within your means and play your cards right.
Not really it should be a concern of anyone trying to get ahead.
White people problems are the following:
Any trendy coffee shops around?
Where can I get gluten free.....
Wholefoods? TraderJoe's?
Is the area cool? Are other cool people around there? Would I be cool if I live there?
I'm not superficial, and don't care if the area is trendy, but I care about all of the above.

My starter house is my forever house. I pay 1400 for a 950 sq foot ranch. I am going to sell it and retire to the South.
You think people are going to feel sorry for you because you are only making 65k at 28, ja ja boo... hoo...
You do realize that's more than the household median wage even in NYC.
Anyways I think I made that much by 28 and I was pretty stoked and definitely not complaining on internet boards. Yes my younger peers were already making that but they were also carrying expensive degrees BA/MBA's with 100k loan debts, me 0 (didn't go to an expensive school and still ended up there with them..., so who actually got the most bang for their buck, ja ja...suckers). I mean it’s good to keep aiming high, but try not to be miserable while doing it, I know I'm guilty of it. It will just eat you up inside and than you realize all that time wasted when you can just be enjoying life.
I am going to be 45 and I make 90. I may make 97k with OT. Am I loser ?
yes
