I live in NJ and plan on relocating to NYC. I have a dog (about 55 lbs) who needs to run around my backyard for about 15 min every day or other day to get her energy out (or in my living room in the winter). The rest of the time she sleeps or will chew on toys etc. I know there a lot of dog parks in the city with dog runs, but I am not sure how she would be with other dogs (she is a rescue) so that idea scares me a bit. My question is, will just walking her get rid of her energy or will she have to actually run around .. I don't walk her really because she has a backyard and runs around the backyard instead. Or are there times of the day/evening/morning that the dog runs could possibly be empty and she could have a few minutes to run around with just me? I don't mind walking her I just want to make sure that will be enough to use up all her energy.

Well, firstly, what breed of dog do you have? Most places have breed/weight restrictions on dogs here, and at 55lbs, your dog is just over; depending on the breed, landlords may not take them entirely.

Secondly, there's almost never a time that a dog run is completely empty; there's almost always at least one or two dogs and their owners, regardless of the time of day. However, I wouldn't start taking your dog to a run regularly until they're properly socialized.

Thirdly, wouldn't you know how to best handle your dog's excess energy better than a forum of internet strangers? If your dog needs to run around and be exercised regularly, then do what the rest of us dog owners do and get up early to take them for a long walk.

You're moving to NYC so just get used to walking places. Walk her in the morning and night when you get home and see how she does in terms of her energy.

You can always try to bring her to the dog run on a leash first and let her sniff the other dogs. See how she reacts. My dog wasn't into other dogs so we just walked him. He was a very lazy dog and went to sleep as soon as anyone left the house. He never liked playing either.

The dog run by me IS empty here or there. But my guess is if you are trying to go there before work, you are probably like a bunch of other people.

No offense, but I'd question the owning a dog if you normally haven't even bothered walking it. This seems to me more of a question for the pet forum - but unofficially I'd say every dog should have a chance to run, and that's your job. I see a lot of people running with dogs, or on roller skates and bikes, with the dog running next to them.

If you do move to NYC I think you will just have to plan on taking your dogs on long walks. My friend walks her dog 3 miles each morning and another 3 in the evening. Her dog is only about 20 pounds but he needs the exercise cause the apartment isn't that big. He also goes to the dog park to play around. Having a dog in the city is a big committment. It's very different then having a house with a big fenced in yard and just letting fido run around.
