Hate to break the news as it pertains to the FDNY. The job requires a certain degree of smarts, which precludes most NYC raised black males. Remember, we're all a product of our surroundings growing up. The black male raised in NYC is prone to be a criminal, not a rescue saving, quick thinking cop or fire fighter. I don't expect the Irish guy from Bayside to be a rapper, so don't expect Tryone from Bed Stuy to be a fire fighter. Simple as that.
Lmao this is quite funny .. read the entire thread and it seems suddenly that the old talking points become mute when stats and graphs and data from the agencies themselves are introduced which counter certain arguments.
As poster stated rather than debate his points you then start to look for ways to attack him personally in an attempt to deflect from the fact he decimated your argument.
However for OP's original point, its predominantly white because its the last bastion of the ol boys club still standing in the city that has not been busted open. As stated it should be puzzling that an agency in a city so culturally diverse does not reflect that make up in its employees when compared to other agencies which do.
However with that said, do you need firefighters, yes you definitely do, because of "Just in case moments". Just like most agencies their roles will be redefined as society evolves and as the stats show the fire trends go lower due to better understanding and training of the general workforce and society.
Pay is not that great (average between 28K and 32K per), status really rather low, out in all kinds of weather, etc..... Pension and other bennies are "ok" when compared to other city workers, but still... Not much room for advancement
