East Elmhurst is nowhere near the top of the list of most "ghetto" NYC neighborhoods. Its basically a less convenient extension of Jackson Heights and Corona, but probably has less crime than either.

It's not even on the list at all.

I wonder if the neighborhoods along the 4 train in The Bronx fit the bill. Highbridge, University Heights, Fordham, etc.

Javawood mentioned Creston Ave so I looked it up on googlemaps, and it actually looked rough!

The worst block from the summer time that I remember being rowdy and looking rough (loitering, fighting, drug dealing) was East Tremont & Anthony avenue in the Bronx right off the Grand Concourse. Definite a throw back block if anyone feels nostalgic and misses old NYC :-)

That whole area is still pretty rough.

A lot of the neighborhoods on the Grand Concourse have that vibe, right?

The roughest looking Bronx neighborhood I've been in so far was Longwood.

Soundview on the other hand, I actually like. People were pretty friendly there.

I don’t like Anthony Avenue either. So many shelters, SROs, rehabs, and everything in between, concentrated in one area. Soundview is dicey too. Very drab.

Soundview has a nice park at least. I bought some of those corn wheels from a nice Mexican lady and we chatted for several minutes.

This might just be in my head, but certain Bronx and Eastern Brooklyn neighborhoods are extremely densely populated yet feel kind of empty at the same time.

I would say anything above 165th and Grand Concourse all the way up to Fordham Rd is ghetto. You can include areas below 165th off of the Concourse as well. If we exclude areas like Brownsville and East New York, the Bronx wins hands down.
