I'm excited for it since I currently live just a few blocks down from the Bay Ridge dock (shorter walk to there than the subway). Makes for a nice alternative to the express bus, and I can switch to the 2 at Wall St. (need to switch to subway from express bus anyway). I enjoyed riding the ferry post-9/11 when the express bus and subway service was disrupted for awhile.
I think the poster was referring to capping the fare at $2.75. The city will need to subsidize it because $2.75 won't be enough to cover the costs. I do agree with the politicians that leaving it at the whim of private companies then makes it something that is only practical for a few people (ie the upper classes).
I believe if I read article correctly the East Ferry will be $2.75 as well.
I kinda see how they are framing it because they want a lot of people to use it and the launch to be successful. If it's too much more than subway people will compare and not want to use it, and it will then become a luxury only a few people use.
Might be feasible IF it allows for free bus/subway transfer, which it doesn't now. If it doesn't, then it's kinda dead at those prices.
most residents who can afford pricey condos by the waterfront properties can afford express bus prices ($6.50)....sure beats battle it out on the L, E/M, NQ subway. Its still far cheaper then LIRR as a comparison.

Not every neighborhood served solely has or is teeming with pricey condos by the waterfront - Soundview, Astoria, LIC, Rockaways, Brooklyn Army Terminal, Bay Ridge...

absolutely true. One can't deny the gentrification of these areas along with overloaded subways in many of these areas is a contributing factor for these transportation alternatives.
They should probably drop the whole 5 boro marketing initiative as it really seems that deBlasio is mostly interested in providing this transit for Manhattan and Brooklyn. And for the particular people of Manhattan and Brooklyn that do not need to receive the subsidy. I don't know how you people don't see right through this guy. He obviously wants to rid you all from Brooklyn.

Once again nothing for Staten Island. The mayors proposal has Stapleton getting a ferry in phase 2, but that area is already well served by the SI ferry and the SIR
