We will get to Katz's eventually but I am put off by a thorough review that talks about waiting in one line and getting a ticket stamped and then going to another if you lose the ticket you owe a million doaars.
Sounds a but too much like the SOUP NAZI.
Ben's Best on a Sunday afternoon was comfortable, easy going, waiter service

Doesn't exactly work like that. You come in there door, grab a ticket, and go and order from one of the many servers, get your food to stay or takeout. Wait at the cashier near the door
no. no. and just no. i worked near carnegie. lines out the door every day, til this very day. tourists or not, they're making a ton of money. it's their business, which is not savvy, which is why he wants to close the restaurant. how the hell has katz been in operation over 100 years if jewish delis were on their way out?
Yea, I think the owner just didn't feel like doing it anymore. Supposedly a former employee is trying to round up people to go in and purchase the place. I hope he succeeds and then as part of it improves the restaurant to what its heydays were. I know meat prices have just kept on going up and up for all delis so it's been hard since it's so meat-heavy, so maybe they can push (and improve) the sides a bit more and get people behind doing that and a half-sandwich (which in Carnegie's case is still massive).
We got a new Deli up the block on Third between 93rd and 94th called The Fillmore. They make a good hot pastrami on rye for $8.50 with real brisket <not round.>. I hope it succeeds. It seems every annual rent increase knocks a bunch of restaurants out of business. Their attendance seems to be improving little by little.
It's not a 3 inch thick sandwich but the serving is pretty ample for 2 to share.
Try it if you are in the neighborhood.
Hey Kefir King, I went to Ben's Best in Rego Park based on your recommendation and it was good! It was kind of pricey because it's kosher but that was a very good pastrami sandwich. Now you'll have to try Katz's!

Ben's Best is very good and there are a few good ones on Long Island too.
