For a wile I've been asking myself. Who goes to diners and why?
With an abundance of good restaurants, both cheap and expensive and with Yelp in the palm of your hand, its basically very hard to eat bad food. Yelp is a great tool to seek out all sorts of food places.
I love having breakfast at a diner. I seek out cozy diners with good reviews if breakfast is what I am after. But that is it.
Who goes to diners? What does the future hold for them and why?
I love diners. You can get a ton of different stuff, which is generally not bad quality, for cheap. Too bad they're disappearing. I think their problem is they are a "middle of the road" thing. There is cheap low quality stuff like Mcdonalds, and expensive hipster stuff. The way the NYC economy is now, there aren't many "middle" people except in far-out places like southern brooklyn and east queens, which, probably not coincidentally, are where there are still diners.

Thing is . I expect my food to be great. Even if its cheap. So average type easy going style of a diner doesnt appeal to me.
I was thinking the older generation might just want something of a same, familiar, which is why they stick to diners.
Lasagna at a proper Italian place Im sure is better than at the diner.
Burger Joint vs Diner
Steak vs Diner.
I like a diner because it's warm, friendly, cheap, and the portions are plentiful. If I want to eat with stuffy, dressed-up foodies, I, too, would pay $250 per person to eat a Ramen-noodle-cake-sized meal.
Diners are for breakfast/brunch food. For me, they have the best breakfast food in NYC. I would never go to the diner outside of breakfast food. But I can eat breakfast food any time of the day when I am in the mood for it.
I love diners, though they vary pretty wildly in quality. Those giant menus full of good standard diner fare is great, but some places can't even do a sunnyside up properly.
I live on Staten Island and spend a lot of time in Jersey. I go to Diners all the time. Some are just okay but some are very good. You can get anything from breakfast to a steak dinner at some. I had a ribeye dinner Monday night at one that was very good. I love them and I miss some of the old good for breakfast only small places that used to be around.

On Long Island, diners are quite popular, some are open 24 hrs. It's nice when you work nights and you can stop for a hot meal instead of 7-11.
