Avocado prices are out of control

Blame Brooklyn, blame hipsters: Avocado prices are out of control - MarketWatch

With unfortunate timing — right ahead of Cinco de Mayo celebrations — avocado prices have spiked to a record high, raising the cost of our beloved guacamole bowls.
Avocado prices have climbed to an average of $1.25 a pop, according to trade group Hass Avocado Board, which scans data directly from retailers’ cash registers to track the price. As recently as January, the average selling price was just 89 cents, and in February, it hit a low of 77 cents.

Avocado prices going up has much more to do with supply than demand. Rain conditions in Southern California caused less than normal production. Same thing happened in Mexico.

Now if you REALLY want to see some expensive avocadoes, let Trump pass his stupid border tax on Mexican imports.

What's stupid about our borders being flooded with cheap imports? There's nothing fair about the trade policies that we have including with Mexico. It has to change. Maybe you like all of the crap that comes from China but I sure as hell don't. We live in America. We should be able to get American goods grown here.

There's a pretty good reason why an excessive import tax is stupid in his post, but you seem to have ignored it.

I didn't ignore it. Yes I know avocados will cost more... Boo hoo... Well we can always get some more toxic food from China if push comes to shove. How does that sound? Hey it's VERY cheap and also full of God knows what, but yeah that stupid "excessive" border tax... So stupid... Everyone loves CHEAP goods until there's a recall. Maybe you forgot about all of them from places like China. I haven't. Ultimately you get what you pay for. There's no such thing as a good cheap deal. There's always a catch... Always.

I have a great idea. Sell avocados to hipsters at $5 a pop and the rest of us native New Yorkers can have the dam things for .65 cents a pop.

The San Franciscanization of NYC continues. I'll stick to my Guyanese avocados. God bless South America.

We can. The public would have to pay more for them though. You have a lot of disdain for "unskilled" labor, but with that companies have the mindset of contracting out to the cheapest contracts they can for certain things.

Notice Trump has made no moves on trade, and he is not going to.

Avocados and other tropical fruits/foods don't grow in the US. They have to be imported anyway.
