What a fallacy, shutting down at night would in no shape or form improve the subways in NYC. The subway isn't breaking down because of 24 hr service it's breaking down because of incompetence

One of the best things about the subway is the 24 hour service. I've been in London several times and after all of the trains shut down late at night it sucks trying to get home. New York is the city that never sleeps, and that includes the subway.

Soooo many people have to be at work by like 5AM, which means they might need to be on the subway before 4AM.

There's really not a big (or any) window where the subway is dead, from 3AM to 5AM you have a mix of drunk people going home as well as people headed to work.

The E and the J as well. I often have to stand on those two trains during late night hours.

The Brooklyn-bound J platform at Essex st is always packed all night every night.

Fare evasion is too easy here, I've seen so many people not pay for trains or buses in NYC. You can't get away with that anywhere else. If raising fares would help with maintenance I'd be glad to pay more but it might be pointless because more people will just fare evade.
Most cities charge distance based fare. This has already bugged me. The reason why people live farther out is usually (at least in NYC) because they can't afford to live closer. So paying more essentially penalizes those who have the least money. I like the flat fare because of that.

To see what a subway ride COULD be, you need to ride the Q train up to 96th Street at least once.

A recent trip to Asia showed me just how clean and reliable a subway system can be with a 4-5 hour maintenance window every night.

Now, I don't live in NY any more, so I don't really have a horse in this race. I also understand that late night subway service isn't all about nightlife. NY is a 24hr city, and some people's daily commutes happen in the wee hours. That said, I think the city could really benefit by increasing night busses and ending 24 hour train service.
Most MTA buses already have 24 hour service, so no.

Three buses near me, not one of them has twenty-four hour service.

It ends usually around 1:20 AM and doesn't resume again until somewhere around 5:00 AM.
