NYPD putting out sidewalk BBQ's (a very ghetto thing might one add) going back years. Heard of it happening in the 1970's when folks would set up hibachis on stoops, sidewalks, in parks, on fire escapes, etc...
It is not only illegal but very dangerous to have those "fires" where they shouldn't.
Yet people in 3 million dollar houses who have the luxury of private backyards openly ignore the law and have illegal fire pits in their backyards. Yes, it's illegal to have firepits in backyards of rowhouses and brownstones, and against code, but they are all over the place. Do a google satellite view of the rich neighborhoods and blocks and you will see them. No drones to put out those fires?

*LOL* Ghetto doesn't even do it justice. Am visualizing this as I read your post.
open flame on the sidewalk is a health hazard, dangerous and illegal. the cop was in the right.
unless you want to play along with the NYC neo-liberal charade and pretend to be outraged and appalled at the NYPD enforcing a city ordinance, from the comfort of your Park Slope brownstone.
racial profiling, how are those kids supposed to eat? where is Al Sharpton when you need him?

Yes and No. A fire pit for just the sake of fire in a backyard for heat or ambiance is not legal. However, if you are cooking on that open fire then it is LEGAL. That's why I always keep a bag of marshmallows and other Smores making materials when I have my fire pit going just in case we get visitors from the authorities. Of course, my security detail wouldn't let them past the main gate of my $3 million dollar home with out prior authorization or a search warrant.
