Penn Station has always represented the high-class and civility of NYC's best face. A kind of shining example of our society.

I don't know whether I am more shocked or disappointed.

junkees have always been lining the streets of NYC, since the beginning of time. i'm guessing they shoot up in the McDonalds bathrooms.

every single crusty that you see laying down on the sidewalk with face tattoos, a pitbull and a beggars sign is a junkee.

i once was on the 1 train coming downtown from 125th street and a woman nodded out onto my lap. seemed pretty innocent. she wasn't even conscious enough to be embarrassed.

i remember a few years ago on a saturday night walking down St. Marks Place with some friends and there was literally 6-7 people laid out on the sidewalk and in bodega entrances (impeding foot traffic) from heroin.

everyone ignored them because it's a common sight. some looked dead, but it was just their temporary H coma.

And I just don't understand this: I live with these bozos, these people who made themselves zombies...YOU CAN'T HELP THEM; THEY DON'T WANT TO BE HELPED; "THEY" ARE NOT "THEM" ANYMORE; JUST WALKING DEAD.

Such a waste of resources, really...all because we cannot be brave and practical and sensible and adult about life!

Are there drug dealers in that vicinity and if so then why aren't police cracking down?
I used to live in that vicinity back in the mid 90s and it was a drug den area then too. Before the building owners jacked the rent up and ran out the small business owners, there used to be mom-and-pop electronics storefront every fourth door on both sides of 8th Ave from 35th to 42nd street ran by Middle Eastern or Mediterrean looking men. The other businesses was 25 cents peep shows, porn shops, cheap ghetto-style gold-jewelry stores, and fabrics stores that catered to the garment industry.

In the fake electronics store, it was never one man working in the store, it was at least 2-4. You never saw people walking out with a new TV, CD player, nothing. How much business could they have actually been doing to sustain the overhead plus the salary of 2-4 men? My neighbor and I used to say that those storefronts were probably covers for mafia money-laundering, drug dealing, and who knows what else.

At that time, the people that came in and out and solicited around that location were a lot of homeless crack heads. It was the skankiest restaurant in the city. I'm surprised that McD's headquarters didn't close that location back then. Am shocked to hear that that it's still opened.

I've seen one laying out on the sidewalk causing a traffic jam in foot traffic on the sidewalk. This was years ago, and I thought he was dead. Everyone else just walked over him and went on about their business. When I finally got to where he was laying, I didn't know what I should do: call 911 and report a dead man laying on the sidewalk on 8th Ave? As I was contemplating and simultaneously holding up more foot traffic behind me, people were passing looking at me like don't bother yourself with him. In a split second, the man grunted in his sleep/high-ness. That was my answer - he was OKAY so I kept walking headed to my destination.

Are you new to NYC? There have always been lots of junkies. There's a movie from 1971 called "The Panic at Needle Park" and it features NYC heroin addicts

Disgusting.
