I got a friend living currently in germany who wants to work and live in NYC. She wants me to help her find a job for her here in NYC. I got 2 questions:
1) I got her resume. Should I put my number on the resume for potential employers to call me to explain that shes not in USA presently but will be soon? Or should I leave her german number on it?
2) Whats the best way to find NYC jobs that sponsor foreigners to work in USA?
She can't work legally in NYC or anywhere in the USA without a "green card." Plenty of illegals work "under the table," but there is intense competition for the menial jobs that the illegals take.
Having no idea of this person's skills, can't offer much help, but she could try an international organization, for which you don't need a green card or sponsorship, such as the German Mission to the U.N., the German Consulate (Embassy is in D.C.), any German cultural organization supported by the German government, or the U.N. itself, but the latter is pretty difficult and competitive. Otherwise, she has to have a pretty sophisticated skill set to approach companies on her own and convince them she's worth sponsoring. You can't do this for her. She needs to do this work herself. She might try getting a job with a U.S. company in Germany, and after a few years, try to get transferred here, at least for a temporary posting. Or get a job with a German company that has a U.S. office and work toward a transfer here. Even that would be difficult, though, and would not be immediate.
Don't mean to rain further on your parade, but it sounds like with the legal status of your German friend, she will have to be sponsored by an employer, a very expensive proposition that most firms are not willing to foot. I am pretty sure a statistic was posted somewhere that indicated the employers willing to carry the expenses of a foreign national is very disproportionate. Only a few companies sponsored the most individuals.
Also, what are you getting out of this? You are sending her resumes to jobs for her. She can do this from Germany via the internet. Are you writing a cover letter too for her? It seems odd if she was a professional.
