NEW YORK (FOX5NY) - Skyrocketing rents are being blamed for the coming closing of the B.B. King Blues Club & Grill in Times Square. The music and entertainment club has been on 42nd St. in the heart of the Midtown area for 18 years.
It's final performance will be on April 29 and will feature Buddy Guy. The club hopes to open a new location somewhere else in Manhattan.
To honor its storied legacy, B.B. King's will host a very special closing week celebration which will consist of performances by: Buddy Guy, Rick Ross, Slick Rick & Doug E. Fresh + Special Guests, El Gran Combo, George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic and more.
"Despite many sold out shows, the location's rent escalated to an unsustainable level, leaving us no choice but to close our doors," said COO Tsion Bensusan in a statement. "Unfortunately this has become a growing trend in New York City, with other iconic music venues and businesses falling victim to opportunistic property owners."
All shows scheduled beyond the April 29th closing date will be moved to various venues throughout the city. The weekly Sunday Gospel Brunch featuring The Harlem Gospel Choir, will give their two final performances at B.B. King's on April 22nd & 29th.
First opened on June 20, 2000, the club has featured live performances from hundreds of musical greats including Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Etta James, Little Richard, Chuck Berry, and B.B. King himself.
The owners of bb kings which is blue note and sony opened a brand new music venue instead in partnership . Sony hall is a state of the art venue and the bb king shows were shifted this month even while bb kings was still open .
We had tickets to see brian culbertson at bb kings two weeks ago . With the grand opening of sony hall the show was moved there . Sony hall is on west 46.
Blue note owns bb kings as well as other venues around the country .blue note started life as a club in the village decades ago. Sony hall is a joint partnership between them and sony.
The sound system is superb and is sony's attempt at the ultimate venue sound .
Only gripe we had is there are tables you sit at . There are 8 to a table and are so squeezed in like sardines .food was good and a bit pricey .
It cost us 85 a ticket plus another 88 for 2 half glasses of wine and 2 salad snacks . I would go again in a heartbeat

I think this is a great opportunity to move the BB king to Harlem. Harlem needs music venues of quality and daily programs.

$88 for two half glasses of wine and two salad snacks?? Was the wine even good?

Eh, food and drinks are usually expensive at these places--I just roll that into what the "real" price of admission is. There's only one jazz and blues club in the city that gets good performers and has great and pretty decently priced drinks and meals, though it's cramped as hell and the acoustics can be a bit better.

I am not a wine lover so unless it is very sweet i never like it . The food was good though .they could use a bigger selection but they just opened this month so they will expand it over time .
I go to a lot of concerts and am a drummer . I thought the sound system was the best balanced i have heard. Drums and bass had amazing punch. Kudos to sony
