People who could relocate already done so. Most jobs still require residency in NYC area.
Derek Jeter considers himself a Floridian while playing for Yanks.
It's funny because it isn't true.
Other than certain civil service positions there is no blanket requirement by private employers that employees must live in NYC area.
Yes, for certain positions can see where living close to work would be a requirement; post graduate physicians or some such. However bottom line is most employers look at if someone will be able to get to work on time each day (commuting). Long as that happens few bother with where someone actually lives.
Leigh Valley and other parts of PA certainly aren't "NYC area" in terms of commuting distance, yet plenty of people are moving down there. In fact didn't we just have an entire thread on "super commuters"?
Employers care about getting the best qualified person for a job, and that they arrive on schedule ready to perform. If you can do that with a thirty minute commute or three hours is neither here nor there.
Should also point out residency within NYS or even NYC means something different than those who only come into the city for employment. You are aware that tons of people from NJ, PA, LI, Westchester and elsewhere are *NOT* NYC or NYS residents. Tax wise maybe another story, but there is nothing stopping someone from say living in Miami, but coming up to the city for work. Indeed telecommuting has changed the idea of face time 40 hours per week being mandatory.
"In anticipation of higher tax bills, the Intrieris and others have already relocated to states like Florida, which has no income tax and low property taxes. "
I thought Florida has one of the highest property taxes, no??
A few years ago, before Trump, one hedge funder moved from NJ to FL. By doing so, he blew a $300 million dollar hole in NJs budget.
The thieving NYS politicians (at all levels) better figure out if they don't seriously cut taxes, the geese that have been laying their golden eggs are going fly south.

2.5% property tax on a property that costs 1/3rd what it would in NYS is still a large reduction.
0% state income tax more than makes up for it.
That's why my designated escape from NY location is Las Vegas. No state or local income taxes, and property taxes are actually lower. And I can get a 3 bed/ 2/5 bath house for half what I can get from selling my 1 bedroom apartment.

Understandably so.
Do your homework and visit often, Las Vegas, for many, has little to offer, which somewhat is reflective of its price tag.
