it seems like every couple of months they park a bunch of cop cars there and stand in the middle of the road. they look at everyone and force some people to pull over. anyone know the specifics of what they are looking for and why they decided this type of enforcement was necessary?

Random seatbelt, registration tag, inspection tag check, with a bit of profiling.

They do these all over the city. Sometimes during rush hour, and sometimes at night at main througfares to catch drunk drivers. Staties frequently do them on the bridge crossings causing traffic jams.

I got a couple of camera speeding tickets driving through there. This is a targeted enforcement area.

Did they point their guns at you? What exactly is “aggressive” about checkpoints?

they are standing in the middle of the road slowing everyone down and intimidating all the drivers. unless they are looking for specific felons, i dont see why they need to do this.

checkpoints where people are actually forced to stop are violations of the 4th amendment. however, they arent stopping people so its just intimidation. you are being conditioned to accept their tyranny and some people clearly have accepted it wholeheartedly.

however, even though they are wrong here its not like they gave a blanket ok to everything done during a checkpoint. police are still not allowed to search your vehicle or test you unless they have a reasonable suspicion that a crime is committed. you dont even have to give them your license. but yeah, according to the supreme court they can make you stop. thats about it.

also of course, the police have been known to manufacture probable cause to harrass people or to just plain harrass people taking advantage of people's ignorance of their rights.
