Athletes training in these ice rink sports often have to work full time jobs while training for tbe Olympics. Perhaps a partnership with US olympic sports development is in order. Athletes can train in tbe Bronx while working full time in the Metro area. Perhaps athletes and coaches will establisb dorms in the area. I think tbis is tbe vision for tbe area in addition to exposing locals to these sports. It will be a unique enterprise for sure.
For sure if it was proposed today to build a Botanical Gardens or Zoo in tbe Bronx today so many of you would assert the Bronx wont benefit from a Zoo. Who needs a Botanical Garden. Bronx Guyanese would assert tbe local Guyanese kids would be better served with a cricket pitch and Italians a botchy ball pit or something equally as stereotypical as be argued earlier. I would see you guys argueing middle class people would not trek to the Bronx to see flowers. Or why would people travel to the Bronx Zoo, I mean the City already has several other zoos right ?

Thanks Blake. I first heard about the plans for skating rink and was skeptical. Yet, what is the alternative that offers the Bronx something so unique and innovative ? Surely, the Bronx has plenty of parkland that can be developed for other summer sports. I would also like to see a giant swimming complex but that reality should not stop the building of a large winter sport complex. If Madrid, London, Toronto did it we would say" Sure that is great, so smart " NYC as a first rate City can benefit from the project. And even more such projects. The locals will benefit from knowing our borough is seen as something else then just what it has always been.

Olympic athletes train in Colorado buddy. But you win the thread. My statement is utterly pointless.
Someone wants to build this rink complex for a reason in NYC. Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn likely would be preferred but are too expensive. Then you have this available gigantic space near the 4 and D train, and near Westchester County that is vacant, and they are trying to make it happen. It may never come to fruition but the Bronx already shopping, we have parks, we have schools, and other places to develop. This unique facility is worth it for the Bronx. It could be a source of pride and interest for the whole City and Kingsbridge Residents.
The arguments against this are silly. The rinks wouldn’t only be servicing the people in the BX. People from other boroughs and the surrounding counties would access them too.
My coworker’s kid plays ice hockey. One big challenge in the nyc area is that there aren’t enough rinks so the practice times are at insane hours early in the morning. Add to that she has to drive her kid out to Long Island for the rink becase that’s the only one available to her kid’s team. This was a very similar story that I’ve heard from kids who played ice hokey at my high school in Westchester. Insane practice times becase there are so few rinks in the surrounding area. If there was a mass transit accessible set of NINE rinks in the BX, it would be used by many more people than just those living in the BX! Also consider it’s cheaper to build in the BX and that the BX is close to Westchester and has easy enough access to NJ so you likely get a lot of people from those areas using it.
