The taxes from the rich is actually what is keeping NYC and NYS afloat. In fact, all the freebies for the large underclass in the city and state (housing, food, health, education, transportation, tampons, etc.) are all paid for by the rich and middle class. New York would be broke without the rich.

The taxes that make the city and state a lot of money are not just income tax. There's property tax, real estate transfer tax, sales tax, gasoline taxes, alcohol tax (lots of bars in the city), and of courses taxes on things like hotels, etc.

But of course you're right, if not for the corporate sector and for having very wealthy people in NYC and NYS it would be broke. Duh!

Even though it's a competitor, I can see this making Trader Joes a lot more interested in LIC. And I'm sure de Blasio and Cuomo are working on getting other big tech companies to put offices in LIC.

Increased demand and limited supply. 25,000 new jobs in one gulp is significant, especially since there is other job growth that this is on top of.

I'm sure that As soon as AMZN starts moving to LIC, a Whole Foods will show up.

Another area where I'd expect to see increased residential demand as Western Queens develops into a corporate hub is the Queens Village, Bellrose, Floral Park area.

How would something in Long Island City affect Staten Island's real estate?

Who would pay the super crazy expensive Verrazano Bridge toll and fight nightmaric traffic to get to LIC when there's hundreds of other more convenient places to live where that wouldn't be an issue? The alternative to this would be to take the Staten Island Ferry to the crowded W subway line and walk XYZ blocks to the location OR take multiple subway lines and transfer; which sounds almost just as daunting (especially if you live deep in Staten Island and getting to the SI ferry can already be a hike).

Staten Island got SCREWED the hardest on this Amazon deal. Personally, if I lived on SI then I would add this to the top of the laundry list of reasons to petition leaving NYC.

Staten Island actually got Amazon first. Sure not the big executive positions, but the shipping facility that recently opened employs a lot of people. And keep in mind, jobs on SI, unlike other boroughs, are overwhelmingly staffed by people living here.

It’s part of a corporate park which will soon include three monsteous buildings employing at least 10,000 people, maybe more.

I remember that. It’s a big distribution center. People forget that all shilling operations like Amazon have to do is bridge and tunnel it to the other boroughs. That was a great deal for SI and the whole city.

After that they decided to put another distribution center in Woodside and then half of the second headquarters in Queens. Way to go SI and Queens. I’m glad the city is being developed in a less Manhattan centric way.
