My current position is being eliminated as of mid-November. I really would like to stay with my company, but pickings are slim in our NYC offices, where I am located right now.

There's a position available in our Pearl River office, which is a decent match for my background/skills, etc...I am just really unsure of the commute. The office is located just off Middletown Road, not too far from the Nanuet Mall.

I actually spent a lot of time in Rockland as a teenager, and am quite familiar with the area, I just don't know how much of a hassle it would be without a car. (Note, getting a car IS an option eventually...moving out of Manhattan is not, at least not in the near future).

I've seen the maps for NJ Transit, and am checking into the commuter buses (having trouble finding the Rockland schedule/route info though).

Does anyone have any experience with this type of commute that they can share? At this point, the only thing stopping me from applying to this position is its location...it would be a great opportunity and quite a big more money.

Thanks in advance!

Well it wouldn't be stress free, I can say that. Think about the 4,5,6 to the shuttle and the shuttle to annoying ass times square. Then walking the long block over to the annoying ass port authority. And then waiting for the bus which will more days than not be running late. And then said bus most likely hitting some traffic (granted not as much as going inbound). I'd say the morning commute would take no less than an hour and a half door to door.

Oh and the busses you could take are the 11A or the 20 if things are still the same as they used to be. The gate at the PA would be 220.

IMO, you're better off moving to Rockland.

I had a friend who worked at Pfizer in Pearl River doing the reverse commute from Chelsea.
Forget about doing it any way but by using a car.

Yeah, I was afraid of that. How bad do you think it would be driving? Without traffic, I would estimate not more than 25 minutes tops (get on the FDR N at 96th, take to HRD/GWB, and then take the Palisades to Exit 7). With traffic, who knows...

There would probably be some potential to eventually work from home a day or 2 a week, which would definitely ease the stress there - it just wouldn't be immediate.

I'm thinking if I wanted to go for this, I'd definitely need to get a car. It's looking like the public transportation option is not really one.

BTW, moving to Rockland isn't an option either - I just resigned my lease, I love my apartment and where I live, and I wouldn't want to move for a job I am only considering applying for, at a company that likes to downsize with alarming regularity. If I move, it's out of NYC altogether.

I saw something about a bus that runs from the Tarrytown MN station to somewhere in Rockland...I wonder if that would be an option for a while...

bg, that's my company. I guess I could always apply for the job, and then if I get it, get one quickly...I kind of want one anyway. Parking in my neighborhood isn't bad at all, and I would definitely have a lot of use for it.

The TappanZEExpress probably would not work for you, as it travels to the park and ride lots along 87/287. The Nanuet train station, however is only about a mile away from your work location, so it might not be too bad of a walk. The only issue might be work hours, since the trains from Penn Station don't start to Nyack until 8:45 at Penn, which would get you to Nanuet around 10am. A car would be the easiest way to travel between the two, but you might want to cross the Tappan Zee certain afternoons when the GWB is stopped.

Thanks, bmwguy. I guess I have to give this a little more thought before I apply. Sounds like a car is the only realistic way to do it.

The First outbound train to Spring Valley departs Hoboken Terminal @ 8.30am , most Employers along the Spring Valley line although for there employees to take the train even though it runs later then when they start. The Train station in Pearl River is right in the Downtown , a small amount of Employees at the nearby Pfizer plant commute by train or bus. The plant itself is a 10 min walk from the station. It takes about 45-50mins to get from Hoboken / Secaucus JCT to Pearl River , unless you get a New York Express train which cuts the trip down to 30mins.

My aunt lived a block from the train station (New Jersey Transit) in Pearl River with the next stop Nanuet. It was a breeze for me but I was living in Jersey City atop a PATH station.
BUT for you means you would have to get to Penn Station and go through Hoboken or Secaucus Junction...I'm sure one train will do it.

BUT getting from the UES to Penn Station is tedious and time consuming, doubly so with a hefty walk to the East Side IRT.

Without a car the trip sounds awful. With a car the trip sounds awful.

Perhaps a subway North to the 125th St. Bus Station and a Bus to Pearl River-Nanuet will do the trick a lot faster but I've never tried it.

the car commute isn't bad according to my friend, once you actually get to the GWB outbound its usually minimal traffic and the palisades is a breeze
