Thanks, everyone. Yes, my heart is very torn, but this is all so helpful. I do love my hometown and I'm lucky enough to be from a city that's still pretty big in relation to the rest of the country (Columbus!). My job is fairly NYC-centric, but I've found a job in Ohio and my husband plans to freelance. I'm taking about a 15% pay cut, but it's still a good deal of money.
I do think it could be hard to come back, but we don't own property now so we're not giving up that at least. Plus, our apartment is total crap so no big loss there!
Why are the property taxes so high? How are property taxes determined in NYC?
I pay school, town and county taxes all wrapped up in my property taxes.
School taxes are high due to personnel and pension costs. Some NY teachers pension are over $100,000 a year. NY does not tax teacher pensions. Town taxes include pension too. Westchester county has a whole layer of bureaucracy (which towns already have) including its own police force (which each town also has). I have no idea why.
