The English Village of Gotham, where the locals were considered mad men and which featured in the stories of the "Wise Men of Gotham".

"Gotham" was later used by American writer Washington Irving as an alternative name forNew York City in his Salmagundi Papers (1807). In turn, Bill Finger named the pastiche New York home of Batman, Gotham City.

Washingon Irving lived in Birmingham in England, which was not too far away from Gotham in Nottinghamshore also in the English Midlands, whilst in Birmingham in England, Irving wrote The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.
