Funny that they decide to turn these things off at night, when excessive speeders are the most common. Dangers for pedestrians are even greater at night.

I wonder if it is a matter of the cameras being able to accurately function in the dark? Or cost to operate/store footage?
Mayor Bill de Blasio announced today that the new speed camera program will go into effect on July 11, with about 40 cameras installed every month through the end of the year. By this time next year, the city will have just about reached its ultimate target of getting 750 speed cameras in school zones.
I'm not opposed to this.
If these really are meant for protecting school zones then it makes sense to turn them off at night.
I used to be against speed cameras but then I thought better of it.
Local government needs funds to operate. They can get those funds through tax increases, various fees or traffic fines.
It finally dawned on me, I don't speed so why should I be against speed cameras? Would I rather have my taxes or motor vehicle fees raised?......or let those who break the law and endanger other drivers pay fines instead?
It was a no-brainer.......traffic cameras save me money.

The problem is they will still double dip and do both ..you will save nothing
I'm starting to like cruising at 25mph, but it should be only schools hospitals playgrounds. Speed bumps last a long time,so add some of those too.
Speed bumps probably greatly reduce the lifespan of shocks and struts even when you slow down to the speed posted for them. It's like driving over a pothole. Even if you go very slow it can't be good for your car to bounce over them. They are all over in Queens on major streets. One block over from me there are four speed bumps between a single set of stop signs. If you take two car trips a day that's 16 passes over speed bumps in about an eighth of a mile.
