Most basement apartments are illegal, I don't know why people don't find this out before they sign the lease.

I wouldn't think the LL is supposed to pay for a hotel for your stupidity. the LL didn't force you to sign the lease or move there for that matter. You did.

How does anyone with half a brain think it is really safe and healthy to live in a basement.?

Basements are not for living.

Guilty verdict for Daniel Ignacio in 2010 Bensonhurst fire that killed 5 | 7online.com

18 people were living in a 2 floor tenement split into many rooms.
5 people died, and they werent in bed, which proves they were trying to get out, but couldnt. Some rooms had no windows.

Most people don't know this jerk.

You don't know this woman's story or background. Many people haven't a clue a basement is an illegal apartment, especially if they are NOT from here.

Maybe if this stupid ass Mayor had created AFFORDABLE apartments instead of putting up SHELTERS all over the city where his rich friends could get $3,000 per person, then people wouldn't have to resort to living like turn of the century early 1900s NYC.

Landlords blaming TENANTS for moving into their illegal apartments should be mandatorily hospitalized on the charge of being terminally ignorant and not fit to live in civilized rational society.

It is a CRIME to rent an illegal apartment in New York. It is NOT a crime to be a tenant in such a hellhole. How hard is that to understand?

If there was rationality to the law it would clearly state that "ALL back rent shall be awarded to the tenant." That would stop illegal apartment rentals within the first year of initiating these awards.

thanks for being one of the first people in this thread with a shred of common sense and decency Kefir King.
The unbelievable attitudes of some of you really make me sick.
Summarily blaming the tenant without knowing the back story is, in my opinion at least, akin to blaming the rape victim for wearing a short skirt.

Reach out the community board and your coucilman for help, they should be able to direct you to someone who can help you, or do what a friend of mine did, he paid $50 to file in court and appeared on judge Millian.
