I didn't know "medical tourism" was such a thing or so common a practice.

Queens protest group Rise and Resist traveled to Manhattan on Monday afternoon to rally outside of Lenox Hill Hospital.

The group of about 20 individuals is raising awareness for what they call “medical tourism,” a practice in which the wealthy travel to receive the best possible medical care. They claim this custom helps fund already well-financed facilities while leaving low-income neighborhoods unsupported.

Yep. If we don't open up in the next few months, expect to see more people doing things like this out of boredom.

How stupid can these 'Rise and Resist' morons be. The money that Lenox Hill, HSS, Mt. Sinai or any other hospital receives helps pay for the hospital care of anyone using those hospitals, including the poor. It's entirely legal and proves that the US has the best hospitals in the world.

Exactly. And that's how you create a downward spiral, where everyone ends up losing. Or leaving, of course, for those who can.

At the beginning of COVID In Philadelphia when poor kids didn't have a laptop or ipad they cancelled all classes because "it wouldn't be fair" if some kids got to learn (even if they were poor too)

What they call medical tourism is how most hospitals stay in business.

Big hospitals needs those elective surgeries and out of state patients so they can pay top dollar for the best talent and keep the whole show rolling. The US medical system is a self perpetuating and ever hungry beast.

Bottom line is someone has to pay for the free or reduced price medical care poor or low income NY'ers cannot or will not. Hospitals all over USA seek out and welcome two sorts of patients, those with excellent health insurance, and or who are financially capable of holding up their end.

As for rest of these people's gripes, everyone who can goes into Manhattan for healthcare. Residents from Staten Island, Brooklyn and parts of Queens. The last two also see people go out to Long Island (depending how close they are) instead of using local hospitals.
