Depressing. See more cars out there than ever before. And nearly everyone's reckless out there. Bicyclists, pedestrians, scooters, skateboarders, et. al. Not only motorists.

While battling the pandemics of COVID-19 and gun violence, New York City finds itself at war with a different scourge — fatal traffic incidents.

The Five Boroughs continue to be on pace for the deadliest year on its streets since Mayor Bill de Blasio took office in 2014, as more people have been killed on the city’s streets during the first six months of 2021 than during any previous first half of the year under the current administration, according to a new study.

Through June 30, 2021, 124 New Yorkers were killed in fatal crashes, including 64 pedestrians, 52 motorists, and eight cyclists, according to a sobering analysis by safe streets advocates Transportation Alternatives and Families for Safe Streets, shattering records for Hizzoner’s seven-year tenure and raising doubts about the success of the lame duck mayor’s pledge to reduce traffic violence under his signature Vision Zero initiative.

“More people are dying on Mayor de Blasio’s streets because he failed to quickly and aggressively scale the safety solutions of Vision Zero that he knows work, instead choosing to deliver piecemeal projects and unfulfilled promises,” said Transportation Alternatives executive director Danny Harris in a statement July 20.

More than 1,700 people were killed by drivers since mayor de Blasio took office in 2014 and launched Vision Zero that same year. Fatalities declined from mid-2016 to late 2018, but increased again in 2019 and soared after the pandemic outbreak, according to the analysis.

What do you do when there are speed cameras and red light cameras all over the streets? You get a fake temp plate from NJ and drive as you like. The timid ones wash the digits off their metal lates to avoid cameras, but the wild ones get those paper plates folks.
Because driving 25 mph on queens blvd is for suckers.

I remember before I left NYC seeing random people jay walking on major streets all the time such as Rockaway and Woodhaven Blvds. The DeBlasio administation has only looked to punish drivers for driving instead of trying to educate pedestrians on street safety and the dangers of crossing streets with moving traffic. All Vehicle Zero is IMO a giant cash grab.

deBlasio took a system that worked in spite of itself and completely destroyed it, and blames the people whose lives that he ruined for the failures of his policies. Typical liberal mental illness.

Way to go dabozio. Vision zero, let’s eliminate traffic lanes and replace them With bicycle lanes (which they rarely use)
So same volume of vehicles being squeezed into smaller a areas. Yup sounds like disaster to me

right, there also has to a strong message against people doing these various plate tricks, maybe.
I was thinking mandatory 5 years but maybe that's too lenient

You hit the nail on the head. Driving around the Bronx, I'm positive more cars have fake paper plate vs. real ones. Also many just skip license plates all together. A few scratch up their plates so that they are unreadable.

All of the above are speeding and running lights ALL DAY.

Politicians have no idea how real life works. more camera's leads to DEADLIER streets.
