This isn't true. When I was the only one working (and going to grad school) and my wife was going to grad school, I supported both of us on around $60K. Yes, we lived in the Bronx and had long commutes but that's life. This wasn't that long ago either (2012 - 2015).
You lived in the Bronx, why didn't you stay? You would have been sitting pretty right now

”Largest expenses were Our studio apartment which was $1250/month. Two unlimited MetroCards ($200/month?), And groceries (which tries to stick to a budget or $100/week). About $2K if fixed expenses per month. After taxes I kept almost $4K. Per month after taxes? Do the math. It's very doable.”
? If you're paying only 25% in taxes, that's a take-home of $3750/mo. How were you ”keeping” $4K?

It was an approximation but I don't believe I was paying 25% at the end of the year. I was prob paying closer to 20% ( probably lower). My wife and I make a lot more now and we pay around 30% now.

Family (especially elderly grandparents) and commute. One we could afford something better, we moved.
I was going to CUNY Baruch and my wife was going to CUNY Hunter so it made sense to live in the Bronx in terms of commuting via the D or the 4 from Bedford Park.

I'm not one of those that live in a NYCHA, drive a BMW, and think they're balling.
