Irwin Young - like Jason Epstein, whom I posted about - is another example of the kind of prominence and expertise that make NYC so great. So admired and respected, especially for his reputation for helping up-and-coming filmmakers.
Irwin Young, Patron of Independent Filmmakers, Is Dead at 94
As the head of a prominent film processing laboratory, he helped directors like Spike Lee, Michael Moore and Frederick Wiseman early in their careers.
“He really cared for the subject matter you were making a film about. If you needed a favor, he was there for you.”

Remembering DuArt Film Laboratories Chairman Irwin Young
Irwin not only simplified and streamlined postproduction, he stepped to the plate to help “impecunious” (his word) indie filmmakers too many times to count, cutting deals, OK’ing delayed payments, sometimes even investing in the films themselves. As a consequence, iconic filmmakers working today—too many to list here—got a leg up when they needed it most, at critical early career-defining, make-or-break moments. Simply put, he cared about their prospects and success.
