I go in few days a week, midtown. All I see at lunch time is a lot of young suits, I mean 20's, kids just hitting the labor market, fresh meat.
If one can work from home, there is no need to come in. Less traffic, pollution and so on.
Yeah, that's why laundries, dry cleaners, restaurants, bars, etc... are all closing for lack of business.
Those service workers may be life blood of city, but their purchasing power obviously isn't replacing bankers, lawyers, and other "big wigs".
You got it. Neither Hochul nor Adams would ever say as much but it's the highly-paid suburban employees that NYS/NYC is desperate to see return to their offices. Many of these higher income WFH people are saving $1000s/year in taxes by being listed as reporting to company offices in their own county/state, thus avoiding NYC taxes or NYS and NYS taxes altogether. Goldman Sachs and Chase have offices in CT, NJ, and everywhere else. Why would that highly paid WFH employee in Darien,CT or Westfield,NJ willingly give up that tax and lifestyle advantage?
I think many (most?) high finance firms are back in office five full days a week. This may change down the road but you’re talking about kids in their 20s who are making 200-500K and getting the type of job experience that opens hundreds of doors.

I was in Blue Bottle last week for a cortado in the afternoon. The place was mobbed like pre-COVID times. Young types like me, but some older types too.

LMAO Scary. You work in Midtown and have never heard of Blue Bottle Coffee? They are all over Manhattan. Personally prefer a good Italian espresso, but Zibetto is a terrible example here in Midtown, so I go to places that are decent. Blue Bottle, La Colombe, Birch, Joe Coffee. A few decent Aussie coffee shops too... Bluestone Lane, Little Collins, etc. Wasn't that long ago that Midtown was a food and coffee dump and expensive. Now it's expensive with options.
All these overpriced coffee stores. . . just get a $1.50 brick of a Hispanic coffee brand and make it yourself. That stuff is strong!
